Just like how Video Killed the Radio Star

1. I noticed that my favorite amateur bloggers have all kind of quit out of blogging all about the same time. By amateur, I mean people who are just blogging about their lives and rambling, like me. I mean people who I know or wish I knew, just talking about their lives. It's kind of a bummer, but perhaps I don't get to complain since I haven't been on the blog much either. When I logged on, my reader really only contained the list of those bloggers who are doing business or generating awareness of themselves or their product and not the social updates and commentary I have come to love about blogging. I'm still reading people's Facebook updates and am thinking of joining twitter, but the long form appears to be lost. Did Facebook kill the amateur blog?

2. My recent awareness of nightmares has increased due to a) trailers for the new Nightmare on Elm Street - even the trailer gives me the heebie jeebies and no, A, I will not EVER go see this with you and b) my business partner's report that she's not getting any sleep because her toddler is waking up regularly with nightmares. I didn't know this was so common. At any rate, I had a horrible nightmare last night/this morning that makes me want to really look at myself:

I was spending time with a friend's husband and child. She, who had apparently been absent, returned dressed up as for a nightclub. In the dream, this somehow really pissed me off and I felt really betrayed - like, how dare she go out while I'm with her family? There may have been something more to it, because I was really upset. Anyway, I leave her house and actually hide from her in an empty home - seems like a model home - probably a nod to my recent house hunting efforts. I successfully hide from her and join my own partner, share an intimate moment and then we have an earthquake. During the earthquake, I actually think about if I should leave her a note forgiving her . . . and decide NOT to!

Seriously, what kind of grudge holder am I? What makes this worse is the drawn out rumbling sound I heard when I did open my eyes - I really thought we were having an earthquake and a jolt of cortisol prepared me to grab the dog and force A bodily into the doorway. My understanding is that doorways or under heavy furniture are the safe places, but that may be for tornadoes or hurricanes. I feel woefully unprepared for an actual emergency and the Red Cross spots suggesting I be prepared are not helping. Nor is the buzz that our area is due for a nice big earthquake any time. Ugh!

3. My goals have gone to the toilet. I don't remember what my financial, professional or personal goals included and the one thing that was making me so proud, my sewing, has fallen by the wayside with the relative dissolution of sewing club after one member injured herself. So, bootstraps, my friends, bootstraps. I've got an article (for the newspaper!) due Tuesday and after that, it's back to the practicalities of making some lists. Hopefully the new phone I'm planning to get in June will be a useful tool for checking it twice.

New Goals

After my first 101 goals expired, I had this idea about making another list. I have been struggling with that list, actively and passively, for 3 months. It's both because I'm more serious about making goals that are S.M.A.R.T. and also because I'm loath to commit to more "goals" when I have so many other things going on. It seems a bit like cheating to set goals that I'm already lined up for like "get married" or "buy a new house."

On the other hand, I would feel pretty accomplished if I was able to mark those approximately three years (1001 days) by checking off an entire list of 101 goals accomplished, no matter if some of them were mild cheats or not. Because, after all, who's being cheated?

In any event, I do have one goal for 2010 that I set and have been keeping up with to my great pleasure. After getting my sewing machine for Christmas, I set a goal to make 12 projects in 2010. One per month with the help of E and Ree, my sewing club buddies. We're set to have sewing club at my house this Sunday for our third meeting. So far, I've sewn 2 car rubbish bags and an oven mitt and hot pad. And I've learned a lot!

I was even able to teach E, an experienced seamstress, a thing or two! I've got several yards of fabric waiting to be made into aprons, place mats, napkins, wine bags, a tote bag and maybe even a doggy coat! I might even try a clothing item by the end of the year. So, when I'm not here blogging about goals that I might or might not ever get to, rest assured that I'm out there meeting my sewing goal one small project at a time.

Free Weekends!

Wow, what a weekend. Friday night after work, A and I loaded up the car with camp chairs, air mattresses, life preservers and all manner of thing we weren't sure we needed and didn't end up using and drove up to Mason Lake in Washington to spend the weekend with friends. We BBQ'd, we picnicked, we swam, I snorkeled for lost treasures (and found only fish that seemed to follow me through the water), we went tubin', A rode on our friends jet ski (which is like a small open speed boat and accelerates faster than a Ferrari!) and Chibo got to learn some social skills with two boxers, a golden retriever and a border collie. Needless to see, he was out sized by all and more than a little freaked out, but I think he had a good time nonetheless. We certainly did.

After all the water sports on Saturday, we found ourselves with a few aching muscles, but luckily no sunburn and decided to head home a little early, but taking the long way around on the coastal highway. It wasn't as scenic as we'd have liked, but we enjoyed the country air and some cherries from a fruit stand just the same. The Astoria bridge isn't as bad coming over from the Washington side, but was still a thrill and we stopped by the beach in Seaside to let Chibo run around a little more before heading home. A and I played "catch" with Chibo - I called him to me then sent him to A, A praised him for coming over and sent him back to me. Since Chibo won't catch a ball, we just send him back and forth to wear him out. It works pretty well.

By the time we got home, all three of us were ready to crawl into bed and sleep off the weekend. Not exactly the most restful of weekends, but definitely a celebration of having weekends off from work! The friends who hosted us this weekend already invited us to join them for camping next weekend, too, so it looks to be an eventful summer.

When I was speaking to my pregnant friend, R, she was telling me that despite being pregnant, she's been able to do most of the things she had put on her list of summer goals, like camping in a fire lookout and other outdoor activities. Not having had weekends off for so long, I haven't really thought of a list of summer activities I'd like to do, but since this December marks the end of my 1001 days, I guess I should re-evaluate my outdoorsy or seasonal goals from that list:
  • 23. Teach a QiGong class
  • 27. Go outrigger paddling again
  • 28. Go for an overnight backpacking trip
  • 29. Go backpacking for more than one night
  • 49. Plant an herb garden (or at least 4 kinds in pots) - 1 down, 3 to go - I've got a mint in a pot out front.
  • 50. Plant a vegetable garden - well, this isn't going to happen, but maybe I can get a squash plant into the ground or a tomato plant in a pot for the house?
  • 51. Plant Tiger Lily's bulbs - Yeah, I'd like to plant some flowers, but I think I missed my window - aren't these supposed to be planted in spring? Or maybe it's really fall?
  • 59. Hike 2x per week for 2 months - Not sure I like hiking all that much, but we could do a few short local hikes and I'm sure A would love that!
  • 72. Renew SCUBA certification and go diving! Everybody at the lake this weekend was interested in taking a class, so we could probably at least do that part.
  • 80. Go to the zoo - We did this last week when we attended a zoo concert, but I'd like to go again.
  • 81. Have a day of gracious living - tell people about the concept. Will have think about this one.
  • 95. Take the train to Seattle - we have a coupon!
  • 97. Have a cocktail party - make a new drink for friends! I can't wait to do this one!
  • 100. Go to Olympic National Forest - wow, we could have done that this weekend! Guess we'll have to try for that next month when we head up that way again!

Looks doable. Let's see how we go.

Goal: Baby Afghan

After learning that my friend is pregnant, I immediately started looking up all kinds of craft projects for babies and pregnant moms. Unfortunately, my history with completing crochet projects is not great, but this 9 month deadline is a great motivator. I'm thinking of making her a couple of small things - a baby afghan, maybe a stuffed bear and there's a cute bear garland for the back of a chair or wall that shouldn't take long - but I decided that I have to finish the other two projects that I've started before I can buy the yarn for baby projects.

If I can't finish my other projects and her gifts by the time we do a baby shower, I'll pick her up some great organic baby products instead. Win-win. Then I wouldn't have a project lingering over my head to feel guilty about and an unfinished baby blanket that's too small when it's done. And if I do complete my mom's afghan (which I started in 2002!) and a baby blanket, I feed two birds with one seed!

Cruising Day 7: At Sea

The last day of the cruise was spent at sea. By plan and chance, we spent most of the day with our cruise companions. Nearly everyone in the group tried out the rock wall - including me! Goal #5 Try Rock Climbing - Completed! In my recent goal posts (ha ha, excuse the pun), this goals seems to have fallen off the list, probably because I hated it so much, but I accomplished it - accomplished "trying" rock climbing. I didn't get more than 2 feet off the ground and probably tore something in my romboids, but I overcame my fear enough to try and that feels good. My competitive nature came out and I wanted to keep trying until I could get higher, but in this, my fear had the better of me. But now I know that maybe, just maybe, I'll try it again sometime. And if I never do, well, I did try it once. A couple people also boogie-boarded on the flow-rider and the rest of us enjoyed spectating that event since it was crazy windy that day.

We had lunch in the formal dining room, which A and I hadn't even known was possible until mid-cruise. Of course, on days at port, we were never onboard during lunch, but we missed that opportunity on our first day at sea, so we told everyone who wanted to meet us there at noon our last day at sea and we had a nice group of about 10. I think everyone enjoyed their meals and I enjoyed another meal at table with my new friends.

We spent some time in the afternoon discovering the final nooks and crannies of the ship, including the absolute front point (think Titanic), the open rear deck, the movie theater and conference rooms (occupied almost exclusively by a 300 member Mah-jong group!) hidden on level 2 and then - woops - time to hot tub. As soon as I noticed our friends in the hot tub, my tour was cut short and it was into the stew for me. Ahh, that's nice after tearing it up on the rock wall. Our group moved in and out of several of the hot tubs, so I got to spend time with several different people - including the flower girls from the wedding who were doing their best hip hop hand movements. Hilarious, cute and spunky.

The rest of the day was pretty much all about packing. I spent some time that afternoon packing, figuring out only when I was done that I would have to unpack everything to accomodate our purchases because they would all have to be wrapped in clothing. A was at the hot tub drinking beers with the guys while I was doing this, so when I was finished I went to find him. I found him, like so many times, near the pizza place. He and the guys had just run into a couple others in the group and there were "hey's!" and various other Italian sounding drawn out noises and then, much to my surprise, a group hug. When the mother of the groom showed up moments later, a repeat of the noisy greeting and group hug. I wonder what other kind of vacation would see us all having multiple group hugs in public like that? It was great!

Dinner, more packing, with A desperately racing to finish (chaos!) before the finale show because I wanted to go together, but didn't want to miss it, the best parts of the show and then some final time with the bride and groom while they packed. Jazz. Sleep.

What I Learned:
  1. If you miss the shows or games on board the ship, they replay the videos of them on the TV.
  2. Especially when shared or large souveniers are purchased, you should just pack at the same time as your travel companion.
  3. Everybody loves group hugs.
My Favorite Part: The feeling of everyone coming together at the end of the trip - once we realized it was almost over, we became even more friendly.

Letting Go...

Some of my musings on why I'm letting some of the 101 goals go...funny in that when I write down my reasons that I don't think I'll do them, I notice that letting go of my have-to mentality makes me feel a little more like doing them.

7: Write my masters thesis. Because of a new Masters program that I am eligible to transfer into, I may not finish this. And frankly, if I can throw money at this problem and make it go away, I'm happy to do it in this instance.

4. Get names/artists for the currently un-labeled music – do I need that much organization?!

14. Sell or donate crafting supplies not in use – I like having them around so I can create whenever I want.

20. Do deep breathing exercises every night for 1 week – I’m just not into this. It's like I think I can force a new healthy habit on myself. Since I'm all about life evolving organically, I don't think I should force myself into this.

30. Get caught up on filing and data entry – what does “caught up” mean? I’ve felt caught up several times and still have a stack. I think I need to define goals like this one a little more clearly.

35. Consult with an adoption counselor – I’m content for this to happen in it’s own time and take it off the list with a deadline.

45. Take ceramics/pottery class – I’d like to do this someday when it feels organic.

51. Plant Tiger Lily's bulbs – ditto.

52. Buy a book on Lily's or orchids – I’d rather take a book from the library one spring when I feel like planting things.

59. Hike 2x per week for 2 months – I just don’t like hiking that much. I'd rather be swimming or boating.

83. Get a fish or bird – Chibo’s enough companion animal for me and learning about what it takes to get fish for aquariums makes me dislike them a bit.

90. Make a recommended reading list for professional development – I don’t want to take the time to make a list, I just want to keep reading.

96. Fast for 24 hours – If I find a viable spiritual reason within my own practice, I’ll do this, but otherwise, I just added this because it sounded challenging.

101 Goals

Due to various reasons, I'm not feeling as connected to my 101 goals project as I had been. I do not think now is the time for some goals (like my trip to Italy); I stopped caring about other goals (like buying a book on lilies or orchids); some goals weren't worded specifically enough for me to feel like focusing on them any longer (like "finish filing"); and there are several that I feel like I completed even though I couldn't document them. The following is my modified list of goals for the next 418 days:

Ding, Dong, The Truck is Gone!

I feel like some transition is complete. I'm moved into A's house and now I've sold my truck. Somehow, having my truck was something left of my pre-living-with-A life and now it's gone. I don't know why it feels so symbolic, but there is definitely a different feeling now that we have his and hers VW Golfs in the driveway. Have I gone from hippie earth cookie doctor to yuppie physician?

It's also weird that I talk about what "we" have all the time now. I don't say it without some self-consciousness, but I still say it and haven't been questioned or corrected to date. As in, "we still have a pick up truck for hauling things around and taking the kayak out."

Anyways, the happy news about the truck selling is that it breaks me even so that I'm in a much more stable financial place in addition to saving money on gas with my new car every month. So, from here onward, if I can continue to keep spending in check, things are just going to get better.

Addendum: I just remembered that this was one of my goals! Goal #26 - CHECK!

Every Friggin Day

My friends from DC were here since Wednesday and I spent every evening with them. Wednesday night, we met for dinner and planned to see a show. When showtime turned out to be 11 instead of 9, we all admitted that the show was just a great way to choose the venue and we were there for the company anyways. Thursday, I went to a game night to see them and was disappointed that I didn't get them all to myself, but practiced my sharing skills and eventually got to play with my friends again. Friday, typical date night, we had dinner and a movie. Delicious middle eastern food and Burn After Reading. And, finally, Saturday, visits to my and E's shops and some rice pudding, hugs and tears as we said goodbye. I had told them I was keeping my schedule open to spend as much time as possible with them while they were here, but never expected it to work out that way.

It was wonderful to spend some time with them, but I definitely was feeling my routine blown a bit. Yesterday, I came home after work and got several hours to putz around the house before meeting them and that was great. So now I find myself wondering about things I do every day and things I don't. I recently set a goal to take and post (to a different site) one photograph every day. My first day was easy, that was the day I set the goal and the goal came after the first photo which was really cool and jumped out at me on its own. The second day, no photo, but I posted one on the third day and pre-dated it the second day. Since then (4 days later), no photos taken or posted. Maybe that has something to do with how I did spend the last 4 days, but I also think it's a goal-setting issue that I have.

I set high goals - realistically or not - of doing certain things perfectly. Post a photo everyday, and make sure it's a good one. Give up soda pop everyday for a month. Do X, Y or Z consistently or everyday. When I miss a day or mess up, I have trouble continuing - this, of course, is the curse of perfectionism. One can't actually live up to the perfectionist ideal that exists only in our heads, so we do nothing. I think that's one reason I actually blog so much - it's easy to blog everyday or regularly because I don't consider this a priority, I don't try to write anything particularly deep or well, and I don't feel obligated either way to write or not write. It's just something fun for fun.

I think goals are important and wouldn't want to be without goals, but I think this is worth thinking about some more. Perhaps I would do better with hobbie-related goals that are about attaining a skill or skill level or trying something new rather than about consistency, especially since my schedule is so packed with work. So, my modified photography goals is to take and post photos on that other site from time to time. And my modified fun goal is to have some, every day. Oops, I did it again.

Reconnecting to Goals

I lay in bed this morning listening to a phone message wherein my friend tells me that my thesis adviser told her that this year's thesis group has really raised the bar. What? They're done with their theses and they're that good?! I'm not done and it's a year post-graduation. I have yet to actually receive my masters degree, finish my board exams and achieve that license. I'm licensed enough to practice and to open my clinic which is where all the energy's been going, but not enough to practice as I'd like and as I ought. So, I decided to reconnect to my goals - review them, remember them, dismiss the ones that are no longer of interest, recommit to those that are.

Actively Working On
Let's start with number 7: Write my masters thesis - I'm setting a deadline for June 27. That's the last Friday of the month and the Friday before this year's graduation. I'm not walking obviously, but there is some heightened level of not feeling good about myself if I haven't at least finished my requirements by the time the next class walks. Since I'm going on vacation and visiting with family for the next week, I'm going to say that Tues, Wed and Friday mornings after my vacation are dedicated to thesis. Today and tomorrow mornings are dedicated to finishing the side job that I continually feel guilty about because I promised a deadline months ago, then reset it for weeks ago and still haven't worked on it.

And, because of my vacation plans and real life, that's the only one I'm fully committed to at present. But it's a whopper!

15. Sign up for Bikram Yoga new member package and use it at least 2x - I'm going to agree with my Chinese doctors and let this one go - my yin deficiency will not respond well to that hot room.
16. Ride my bike to school or clinic at least 5x in spring term - yeah, as stated before, didn't happen.
17. Get a basket or pannier for my bike - since I'm not bike commuting and don't really like buying things, I think I don't need to buy myself something for the bike. It seems like a weird goal, to buy something, anyways.
19. Apply for Mercy Corps business grant - not necessary with new business model. Might apply later if something develops along those lines.
89. Eliminate eggs from diet for 1 month - just not committed to this. Added to the list because my allergy panel suggested that maybe I might be slightly allergic to eggs, but I think they showed up just because I eat them all the time. I should have put dairy on the list!
98. Go to the Garden at least 3x before membership runs out - that didn't happen, but I am volunteering there, semi-regularly and learned that free doesn't necessarily mean I'll do something.
99. Get a new membership somewhere when Chinese Garden runs out - since my Chinese Garden membership didn't work out so well, I'm not sure how committed I am to committing to another place. Will think about it.

Goals # 53: Reading list

53. Read a book every week for 2 months

So, I started posting my reading list and all the books I was getting from the library, but I was embarrassed at how many I returned, and late at that, unread and actually unopened. I did manage to read a book or more every week for the past 8 weeks, though. It helped that they were series books, so my attention was already given and I knew I liked the style of these authors. It's been fun, but I remember now being totally absorbed in reading when I was a kid. I have to find a place of balance, doing some reading, but not getting interested in the stories at the expense of my own life.

Here's what I've been reading:
Week 1: December 31-January 6 Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Week 1: January 7-13 Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey
Week 2: January 14-20 The White Dragon and Dragonsong by AM
Week 3: January 21-27 Dragondrums by AM
Week 4: January 28-February 3 Fool's Errand and Golden Fool by Robin Hobb
Week 5: February 4-10 Fool's Fate by RH
Week 6: February 11-17 Ship of Magic and Mad Ship by RH
Week 7: February 18-24 Ship of Destiny by RH
Week 8: February 25-March 1 Shaman's Crossing by RH.

A Night on the Border

A and I ran for the Border(s) tonight - not Taco Bell, but the bookseller. I tend not to go to bookstores too often since I try not to purchase books, and I especially avoid big box bookstores, but we had a nice evening and I accomplished yet another of my 101 goals.

Number 47: Identify my favorite section of the bookstore - Completed.

I added this to my list of goals, because shortly before starting the 101 goals project, someone asked me which section was my favorite and I didn't have an answer. Not just because I don't visit bookstores, but because whenever I do, I'm overwhelmed by the many sections and subjects that I find interesting. A pointed out tonight what a balm it was for the soul to look at great photographs - while I enjoyed that part, too, the section that really made me happy to be there was the FOOD section! I read about vegan cooking, cupcakes, wine and wok cooking tonight and learned a lot. More importantly, I learned which books were worth another look and which ones I really didn't need. I didn't purchase any books, but I did order a couple from the library, including Deborah Madison's Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. Can't wait!

Yum....

Finishing Touches

New Year's Eve I started playing a game of Guitar Hero while waiting for A to pick me up. He arrived on IST and we had to bounce immediately to make it to dinner on time. I had paused the game midsong to answer the door, so it was still there when we got home in the wee hours. For some reason, before I went to bed, I picked up the guitar and finished the song. I didn't play another, I just finished the one I had started and then turned the game off.

I've been making a conscious effort to finish other things I've started, too, including putting together a box of supplements to send home to my family, finishing reading several books I started and making A's scarf. And I'm more committed to completing my 101 goals list. Those things that I've decided not to do or finish, I'm finishing off with some kind of clear ending. Closure.

I'm not sure why this bug is in my ear, but I think it's a good one. I'm sleeping better, too.

I ♥ Calendars

I have a wall calendar from last year still turned to November because the calendar is in an inconvenient place. I have a Palm pilot with software on my computer to manage my schedule. It's a pleasure to put all the little blocks in place and stretch them to cover the full length of any given event. Because A has a hard time understanding the vagaries of my work schedule, I also have a Google calendar to help him with planning. (He's come to assume that I work everyday, which in some ways is accurate and only likely to become more so as things progress!)

But I've purchased another calendar. A pocket engagement calendar. I love it. I have gotten up this early to shower and eat breakfast before work, but instead I ended up filling in this week and next in the tiny calendar. My intention was that it would be a goals based calendar. Write down when I've drunk soda or eaten eggs or flossed or done breath work (see 101 Goals), so that I know exactly when I've met my goals and/or so I am motivated to just finish it! I know I've come close many times and might even have completed these goals, but without a written record, it's hard to say.

But it was fun penning in my work schedule. And relevant - I can't exactly set aside an afternoon for sending birthday cards if I'm working all day and have a meeting in the evening, can I? So, my goals calendar is likely to be an event record as much as it is likely to contain enigmatic symbols indicating my goal progress and other items I want to track. I'm just such a dork that I don't mind writing my schedule in three separate places.

I can get creative about how I word these, but the intention was really for 2007, so these are unlikely to get done. The thing about this project is that you can learn as much from the goals that don't get done as the ones that do. I learned that I really don't like bike commuting unless it's really easy and that I won't necessarily keep going somewhere just because it's free. (It's funny that I now volunteer there, love the garden like crazy and still don't really hang out there much.)

New Goals Program: Three A Day, My Way!

I'm developing a new goals program. Since I can't remember a lot of things and rely heavily on my computer for keeping a task list, I sometimes get overzealous in my list and then end up doing nothing. To help simplify my desire to get things done, for a while I told myself I only had to accomplish three things in a day. It didn't matter what they were, but accomplishing three things that I had set out to do was enough. For a while, this program really worked for me and I felt like I was making progress on my to-do's.

I decided today to reinstate the three-a-day program with a twist. The twist is that I'm going to set the three daily goals a week at a time and they are going to be project oriented. For this week, for example, my projects are 1. thesis, 2. boards and 3. life. These are all areas in which I would like to see some progression. So I have set goals relating to these three areas for each day of the week. In the life area, my daily goal is just to accomplish 1 thing from my ongoing to-do list. If I accomplish more than 1 in a day, that's gravy, but it doesn't count towards the next day. In thesis and boards, I'm breaking down my writing and studying into small manageable chunks so that I'm not overwhelmed to start and so that I'm working a little everyday instead of cramming once a week on my day off.

Goal Update: Lessons in Vegan Cooking

Accomplished goal #64 tonight - cook a recipe from the vegan cookbook.

The book is Vegan World Fusion and comes from the Blossoming Lotus, my new favorite place to eat. The food is outstanding and vegan softserve is a new flavor everyday and costs $1.

Tried the Polenta and Forbidden Rice Casserole with Black Bean Sauce (sorry, if you want recipes, buy the book, I guarantee it's worth it). Added the optional fennel and shitake mushrooms and used soy milk. Next time, eliminate fennel (too strong), more shitake (delicious), chop all more finely, use coconut milk (more delicious), use less rice (just enough for the bottom of the dish) and more polenta. The Black Bean Sauce was fantastically delicious as is, although I would have liked a slightly thicker consistency, perhaps to be achieved through hand mashing some of the beans instead of blending the lot together in the blender.

It was okay - my guests were generous with their praise, though and the wine - from Cooper Mountain - was great. Cooper Mountain definitely going on the grocery list and into the budget.

Later note (if you can believe me when it comes to time): The leftovers were even better and I think the dish would be improved by the addition of corn bread batter baked on top. Maybe that's how polenta should turn out or blasphemy to the polenta, but I might try it next time. In addition to my "No Fault" cooking rules, I'm going to have a "No Rules" rule - anything goes, as long as it tastes good.

General Updates

1. Doesn't look like postponing boards is an option, so I'm going to run with the 28 days remaining, study my ass off and knock them out. That does allow me to postpone any decision on taking the job I've been offered, though. Glad some option for procrastination still exists.

2. The weather is slowing cooling to the mid-80's for the next couple of days - still not cool enough. I need a plan that involves AC. 101 goals be damned, I'm not biking or walking anywhere in this heat. I will drive to AC to be a more productive studier. The real question is: will I take my computer with me?

3. I want to start saving money for the kayak of my dreams. I've wanted an OC2 (tandem outrigger canoe) for a couple years now and thought nothing of spending some cash on it, but I balked at the $2K price of the tandem peddle kayak - I've decided to balk no more. I'm considering buying one ASAP and paying it off later, but with student loan payments yet to roll in and the possibility of not accepting the job, I think that might not be the most fiscally wise decision at this time.

4. I signed up for my 401K and attended my staff meeting today. I won a T-shirt and a free pint of ice cream. Just to make my 5:30am wake up call worthwhile, I got the most expensive ice cream in the store. Anyway, reviewing my goals really helped me focus on getting some accomplished - I need to keep them in front of me more often.

5. Considering what goals and ideals I have for getting my own apartment/studio/home. Price range, amenities and location all important. I think I'd like to have my own home again at least once more before moving in with someone else - if I take the job, Chibo will just have to go to daycare and if I don't, I can always keep my schedule flexible enough to care for him myself.

Playing with Blocks

When we were kids, playing with blocks was fun. Nowadays, there are no more Lincoln Logs, Legos or regular ole alphabet blocks for me, but rather writer's block, studying block, blocks to working out, sleeping well and getting regular meals. Not sure how my new schedule, with such increased freedom, doesn't seem to be immediately supporting my accomplishment of the next round of goals.
